Magnify.net Raises $750K For Web Video Service Dan Frommer | November 25, 2008

NYC-based Web video startup Magnify.net has raised about $750,000 in Series A1 financing. This is in addition to the $1 million it raised in February. Innovation Ventures led the round, and all major investors returned, including RoseTech Ventures, NextStage Capital, Ogden Capital, and individual angel investors. Magnify also took on some debt issued by Vencore.

What's Magnify.net? A service to add video to your Web site, including:

* Videos you make and host with Magnify.
 • Videos from around the Web (YouTube, Hulu, Howcast, etc.) that you embed via Magnify's back-end.
 • Videos that your users submit and host with Magnify.

One way to think about Magnify is as a simpler version of Brightcove, which has abandoned its free products to focus on high-end media clients. Magnify uses Amazon Web services to deliver its videos.

Magnify's clients include Taste of Home Magazine, which uses Magnify to power its Web video site. All told, almost 47,000 sites use Magnify, which is on track for 30 million video impressions this month.

Magnify.net has about ten employees and aims to be cash flow break-even next year on about $1 million of revenue. It'll use the money to keep building its Web video service, potentially expanding its sales department. [MORE »]

by Michelle Lentz

Magnify.net is a service that allows you to create your own video channel, showcasing videos from across the Web, as well as your own Webcam captures. Magnify offers a free version and a more in-depth Pro version for content enthusiasts, online communities, and small businesses. Additionally, Magnify offers an Enterprise version for larger corporations.

For most of us though, Free is all we need. The free version allows you to build your channel, capture videos from your webcam, find videos from the more popular video sharing sites, and social networking integration. There is also an ad inventory share of 50/50, which is nice. With the free version, you retain control over your site name, URL, and design (including CSS) and can upload twenty 50-MB files per week.

The startup has raised about $750,000 in Series A1 financing, in addition to $1 million raised earlier this year. According to the Silicon Valley Insider,

Innovation Ventures led the round, and all major investors returned, including RoseTech Ventures, NextStage Capital, Ogden Capital, and individual angel investors. Magnify also took on some debt issued by Vencore.

MAGNIFY.Net to power Behind the Burner's tasty new culinary site. Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

New York - Magnify.net, the leading Video Search and Integration Platform for Mid-Market Publishers, announced that it is powering video for the web's newest site for food and wine enthusiasts - Behind the Burner.

If food and wine are your favorite four-letter words, Behind the Burner will spice up your daily dining experience.

Magnify.net will provide video encoding, storage and delivery for the membership site. In addition, Magnify.net will provide video discovery, aggregation, and curation tools for the site.

Behind the Burner couples educational and entertaining content with commerce specials. Contrary to the existing user generated food media sites on the Internet, Behind the Burner relies on culinary experts to give their best tips, tricks and techniques. Todd English (Chef/Owner of Olives), Alfred Portale (Chef/Owner Gotham Bar and Grill) and John DeLucie (Chef/Owner The Waverly Inn) are among the visionaries featured on the site.

Said Divya Gugnani CEO/Founder of Behind The Burner, "We were looking for a solution that could support a high quality site that includes both our own exclusive video content as well as the best of the web around cooking, wine and nutrition videos. Magnify.net is a dream come true. Our developers were able to integrate with APIs and our team can manage the content easily. Best of all, the video platform is flexible and reasonably priced."

"Unlike the traditional fare served up by existing food media sites and recipe libraries, Divya and her team are giving members instant access to world-class professionals who are changing the way we think about food and beverages" said Steven Rosenbaum, CEO of Magnify.net. " We're extremely proud to be working hand in hand with them to change the culinary landscape on the Internet and create a video platform that allows for a world-class experience."

"There couldn't be a better time for us to launch this business," said Behind the Burner COO, Caroline Alexa McBride. "Studies show that 43% of consumers are dining out less and cooking more at home. Also, according to recent surveys 40% of shoppers claim that sales and promotions are the largest factors when determining where to shop."

"We have been continually impressed by the quality and knowledge that Behind the Burner brings to the space" said Magnify.net CEO Steven Rosenbaum. "We think that high-quality expert-based content is a powerful new model that Divya and her team will bring to a hungry audience of over 60 million Americans who visit food media sites monthly."

As web content sites shift from a publishing model to a "curation" platform business, Magnify.net is at the forefront of the curation revolution. Magnify.net is helping publishers capture and grow new audiences by inviting and giving them the tools to become content curators and publishers.
