Magnify.net is announcing today their "video blog in a box" setup which basically allows anyone with a webcam to start a video blog in 5 minutes or less. Sounds similar to the Wordpress.com setup which also takes about 5 minutes. The service is in private beta and you can request a beta invite here.

It's always an interesting discussion when we talk about video blogging. I can sit with 10 people and 5 love it and 5 hate it. Some are doing well with it like Justine, Sarah and Gary but video blogging is still in its infancy.

Podcamp co-founder and online media guru Chris Brogan will host a daily video blog called “Attention Upgrade” (http://www.attentionupgrade.magnify.net) to showcase Magnify's new platform during the private beta.

They have also introduced a variety of new features in time for the holidays including:

* Widget Maker 2.0
 • A Bookmarklet - allows others to refer videos to your channel on Magnify.net
 • Custom Page Builder
 • Flash Uploader
 • and a new Profile Builder

Magnify started out as an aggregation tool that can work in a collaborative manner, and quickly moved into the realm of a personal launchpad for video networks. We’ve received a few updates from Magnify in the past few months, but they seem somewhat minor in comparison to today’s announcement in regards to the continued evolution of Magnify as a service and its inclusion of more networking capabilities to extend the scope of its usability to a wider array of end users.

magnify-chris-brogan.pngTaking on the role of a self-broadcasting tool, video blogging has been added as an option on Magnify. This new feature is currently in private beta, and it comes with some tools to help you get started. One such tool is a plug-and-play Webcam capture tool for building your Vlog page, and personalizing it with graphics and design. Then, they can just start vlogging. Podcamp’s co-founder Chris Brogan has even gotten in on the fun, creating a daily video blog called “Attention Upgrade” to help test out Magnify’s new vlogging features.

What’s interesting about this vlogging feature is the integration with Magnify’s other network and aggregation tools, making it somewhat different from other self-broadcasting sites out there. What you’ve got is an integrated, multi-faceted network (that you’ve created) that operates around the aggregation and personal creation of video content. It should also work nicely with the recently launched ad options for Magnify users as well.

Some other new feature that really highlight the good points about Magnify include its widget maker, which lets you export your video playlists, a bookmarklet for grabbing videos as you surf the web, a flash uploader, and improved custom page and profile builders. [MORE »]

Now that the YouTube era of internet content is well under way, with video playing an ever-increasing role in everything from social networking to political elections, it's time for verticalization to usher in the next stage. Right on cue, Magnify has launched a service that helps web publishers bring subject-specific video channels to their own websites.

Launched in beta version about a year ago, Magnify features a meta-search tool that combs the web for videos matching a site's specific focus, such as aviation, soccer or college life. Users can also upload their own video content, and the resulting mix is available for sharing, rating and ranking by the community as well as integrating into playlists. Magnify provides the templates and controls publishers need each step along the way, including site design and customization; video search, uploading, storage, bandwidth and sharing; and advertising, community, statistics and network tools. The service is free to users and its business model is based on shared advertising revenue with the websites that use its service. Magnify has grown from 20 sites to more than 2,000 user-generated video channels since its launch.

The site's creators explain: "We built Magnify because we believe that everyone has a story to tell and we wanted to give you a platform to tell that story with video. We wanted to make it easy for you to get video and easy for you to share video with the people that make your site or blog so great—your members and visitors."

By enabling video and fostering increased user interaction, Magnify brings critical functionality to sites competing for attention in a rich-media Internet environment where the bar is higher every day. It also marks the next stage of the video era: general sites have had their day—now it's time for the niche, vertical contenders to take hold. Let the diversification proceed! Magnify.net today announced that they will enable anyone who is interested in video blogging to jump in, without needing a video camera, a deck or even web design software.

Podcamp Co-Founder Chris Brogan will be guiding the beta release of this new feature on Magnify.net. If you ever wanted to do a video podcast, but didn’t like the time it took to shoot the video and than edit, this might be the feature you are looking for in a video service.

He will host a daily video blog called “Attention Upgrade” to showcase Magnify’s new platform during the private beta. Chris Brogan and Magnify.net are inviting others to request an invitation if they are interested in video blogging and providing feedback at privatebeta@magnify.net

The Webcam capture tool will be available as a free add-on to the video channel creation platform. Free page design, layout, webcam support, video upload, and even revenue share on advertising inventory make Magnify.net the fastest growing video platform on the web. Already 20,000 publishers have built dedicated content channels the Magnify.net platform.

Since it is my favorite holiday of the holiday season, they are also releasing just in time for Thanksgiving even more new features:

Widget Maker 2.0:

The new widget builder allows sites to create an interactive “remote control” widget to their exact specifications. Users can build an unlimited number of them using various playlists and colors.

The Magnify.net Bookmarklet:

Sites can invite their users to install simple little ‘bookmarkelets’ that allow members to refer videos from around the web to the site owner. This feature turns your visitors into human-powered video discovery partners. This ensures that video content is always fresh and relevant to each channel and its community to keep people coming back for more.

New Custom Page Builder:

As the number of Magnify.net publishers continues to grow, more and more sites are building deep content collections with many pages. The new custom page builder allows site owners to create a video channel structure that works specifically for their layout vision.

Flash Uploader:

Unlike all those video sites where clicking ‘upload’ may or may not finally get that video uploaded, Magnify.net designed a flash uploader that manages the progress and gives you real time feedback on the status.

The Profile Builder:

Not all video channels are created equal. The new Profile Editor allows site owners to build their own customized sign in questionnaire and gather data as they see fit.

FLV Encoder Improvements:

.flv files now provide direct upload, allowing users with their own encoders to upload files that meet their specific encoding standards. The Magnify.net encoder also now supports the H.264 codec for high quality file encoding.

Magnify.net team is led by CEO Steve Rosenbaum, one of the early innovators in the use of small format video, and user-created video. Rosenbaum created MTV Unfiltered, the first series produced entirely by viewers, and directed the multi-perspective feature Documentary 7 Days in September. Magnify.net has been financed by its founders, Venture Capital firm Next Stage Capital, New York Angels, and Active Angels Investors, and a group of private individuals.

Technically Speaking, Steve - I love Thanksgiving, and I would love to have one of those new 16gb iPod Touch - but - I’m a cheap you know what when it comes to buying gadgets for myself. Still looking at them but can’t justify the $400 for something kind of cool, but still missing a few things for that price point IMHO! pearl necklace [MORE »]

Chris Brogan, one of the Twitter gods who recently departed Pulver & Associates has announced he will be doing an online video program on the new Magnify.net platform. His new show is cleverly called Attention Upgrade. Good luck, Chris. Break a link.

He has my envy. Every day I become more convinced of the power of video in social media. I want in. [MORE »]

Magnify.net is releasing a private beta aspect that allows anyone to produce their own Vlog. Magnify's latest addition to their video curation platform lets anyone with a video camera produce, edit and add elements to their own Vlog page. Podcamp co-founder Chris Brogan will be hosting a daily video blog called "Attention Upgrade" to illustrate the power of this cool new tool. Magnify and Brogan are sending out an open invitation to anyone interested in Vlogging as part of this kickoff too.

Chris BroganMagnify is the Web's fastest growing video community - last month when I reviewed the startup the site was getting 10 million page views per month - according to Alexa this number has almost doubled since then.

The new webcam capture tool will be available as a free add-on to the Magnify channel creation platform. The service includes free page design, webcam support, video upload and revenue sharing from Magnify's advertising inventory. Already, over 20,000 publishers have dedicated content channels on the magnify platform.

Other Cool Upgrades

Magnify is also rolling out some other slick tools along with this Vlog tool box. Widget Maker 2.0 allows sites to build an interactive remote control widget suited to their specifications. The Magnify Bookmarklet allows for video referrals from across the Net and essentially adds a human discovery element to updating video. Custom Page Builder and Flash Uploader (and other recent upgrades) provide magnify users with a relatively vast set of video tools.

Webcam buttonMagnification of Video

I really liked Magnify in my last review and it is pretty obvious that the developers are on the right track with this latest news. From a personal perspective, I have often thought of setting up my own "fancy news set" to do some Vlogging (maybe this is a sign?). We see so many tools that add value to the user experience, but enabling video enthusiasts in this way has certainly not be over done this year. Magnify has integrated this new Vlogging into a rather massive network of video content aggregation. The continued addition of valuable user tools will serve Magnify and its users well. Personal creation of video content should be the next great trend across the Web, I have often wondered why it has not transcended text in some sectors, perhaps no one had the tool they needed?
